Every year from mid or late September to the first weekend in October, Germany is in euphoria over Oktoberfest. It is the perfect time of the year to enjoy a pint of beer as the weather is not too cold and not too hot either.
It started as a wedding celebration in Munich some 200 years ago, but now it is all about the beer. Many countries in the world celebrate Oktoberfest, no doubt as a perfect excuse to drink without guilt. However, nothing beats actually going to Munich to really soak in the authentic atmosphere of a German festivity.
You can do many things besides drinking beer in Munich during Oktoberfest. One of them is of course sightseeing. The heart of Munich is a twelfth-century masterpiece, perfect if you enjoy looking at historical architecture, such as Rathous (city hall) and other nineteenth century Gothic buildings. The most iconic one is probably Neuschwanstein Castle in the woods of Bavaria. You can see the countryside all around the castle and fairy-tale rooms.
The next thing to do shopping! You can buy designer items at Marienplatz or fresh local food at a daily farmer’s market called Viktualienmarkt, which is a walking distance from Marienplatz.
There are also restaurants and food stalls at the market for you to enjoy local cuisines. If you just want to relax and watch the hustle and bustle of Munich life, you can sit at cafes or restaurants. Try Hofbrauhaus to feel a 16th century vibe where you can drink at the famous beer hall and eat hearty sausages and pork roast.
There are of course many more things to do such as learning a few German words to help you order that beer or book photo sessions with SweetEscape while you enjoy the sights.
