09 Aug 2019INSPIRATIONBY SweetEscape

Merah putih teruslah kau berkibar! Does that song ring a bell? If you were born and raised in Indonesia, most likely this would be more than familiar to you already. Indonesia's independence day is coming up real soon, and since it's going to be a whole day of celebrations and outings... it's best that you know (or are reminded of) the DO's and DONT's of our Independence Day!

DO's:

1. Wear The Colours!

As Indonesians, it's only right to represent the colors of your country's national flag as a symbol of respect - especially on its day of independence. Since flags have their own meaning and history as to how the flag came about, wearing these colors symbolize how much you acknowledge your country's struggles and decades of progress on perservering until today. So, get out there and flaunt some red and white attire!

2. Join the Games and Festivities!

Independence Day means a whole day of celebration and festivities - and for that matter, you really should join in on the fun! Can you think of other better ways of celebrating your dear country's day of independence? You might be thinking, "Why all the games and festivities?". It's simple - these activities are supposed to encourage you and fellow citizens to come together for a great cause. Not to mention, the games and festivities held yearly is part of the Indonesian tradition, in which staple games have been passed on from generation to generation. Get your family or friends together for a day of eating crackers, egg-in-spoon and sack races for a more intimate day.

3. Respect The Flag

Just as you would be expected in every other country, it's highly important that you remember to always respect the flag. Flaunt it, exhibit it in your homes, wear it on your sleeves - because that is part of what the Independence day is all about! If you're thinking that a flag is just a flag, there is actually more to it symbolically. The flag represents your country and what it stands for. Indonesia's flag colors, red and white, have its own deep meaning to it which adds a whole lot of value to the actual flag.

4. Sing the National Anthem and Patriotic Songs!

Do you happen to be into pop culture and those awesome tunes on Spotify (or the radio) for your daily survival? You're not alone! For some reason, there's always a bunch of melodies to fit whatever mood and emotions we are having. Our personal playlists are great and all, but for this day - we highly encourage you to groove to some elevating national songs that will surely boost your patriotism to the maximum. Are you into jazz, pop, or some modern-rock music genres? No problem! You can listen to just about any national songs within those favorite genres of yours... except for (of course) the Indonesian national anthem. And if you happen to be singing it, remember to sing it with pride!

DONT's#

1.Wear Inappropriate Attires

As most of you (hopefully) are aware, Indonesia is rich in culture and traditions which have been kept and passed on from generation to generation. As a Southeast Asian nation, the country is well known for its core values and ethics which, in most other Asian countries, have died down or faded away slowly but surely. Most of you probably haven't been around that long, but way back in the olden days when

2. Stay Home: Go Out!

If you can go out on your birthday, or holidays such as Lebaran or Christmas... then you have all the reasons to go out especially on this day - which, keep in mind, only happens once a year. Need reasons to go out? SALE! And lots of it too! Go to any of your local malls, and you'll be ecstatic to see all the Independence day shop ales to your left and right. Trust us, going out on this day will make you excited to see the happy spirit of your fellow neighbors and citizens for Indonesia's independence.

3. Create Trouble: Be Peaceful

It's the independence day of your country! Independence from what? From the colonization of communists and colonization, of course. Hence, it's only right to not cause any chaos or riots. If you happen to be out and about, keep it peaceful, keep it calm and collected. Just remember what the day is all about, and the actions you do will reflect the reputation of this motherland of yours. Positivity is the key!
