Grindelwald, most famous for its mountains, including the Eiger, has become one of the most popular winter holiday destinations in Switzerland. Many movie scenes were shot in this village; The James Bond film, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, includes a chase through a skating rink and Christmas festival in Grindelwald. Grindelwald's mountains were used as the basis for the view of Alderaan in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Some of the action scenes in The Golden Compass were also shot in Grindelwald.
In winter, Grindelwald offers many winter sports with two ski regions with around 30 lifts reaching up to an altitude of between 2500 and 2971 m. There are also choices from 80 km of winter walking trails with views across seven 4000 m peaks and majestic glaciers, as well as 60 km of toboggan runs. However, non-skiers can go shopping, enjoy the tea rooms and restaurants, play in the snow, and take photos of the amazing views from every part of town.
There are also many activities which can be done in Grindelwald both in summer. Visitors can go on the 300 km of walking trails around Grindelwald, some of which ranks among the most beautiful hikes of the region. Tourists can take an easy walk with fantastic views of the three, world-famous mountains of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Oh, and maybe run down the green hill in summer singing: The hills are alive… with the sound of music…
