Freedom of Expression: Kresna Julio Talks with SweetEscape
13 Aug 2019EXPERIENCEBY SweetEscape

Merdeka! As we celebrate Indonesia's 74th Independence Day this weekend, we talked with one of Jakarta's most celebrated radio host Kresna Julio about the meaning of freedom and about his experience with SweetEscape.

1. What Do You Think The Word 'Independence' Means?

I think 'independence' is when everybody is able to freely express whatever they want to express. I think freedom of expression is the highest form of freedom, and whenever someone has experienced this kind of freedom, then he/she had experienced true independence.

2. This Year Marks Indonesia's 74th Year of Independence. What Do You Think Are The Kind of Freedoms That Indonesians Have Experienced, and What Still Needs To Be Fought For?

by Joe S for SweetEscape in Jakarta

I think in our 74 years of independence, Indonesia has acheived quite far. The people can now freely elect our government freely, from representatives, governors and mayors, all the way to the president. We are also able to express our opinions freely, especially on social media, even though some people have gone a little bit too far. But so far, I think we as Indonesian people have had most of the freedom and independence that we should have.

The only type of freedom that we're still lacking, in my opinion, is freedom from our own old way of thinking. I think too many times we care too much about what other people might think and it makes us limit our own freedom ourselves, without the government or other people limiting it for us. Take freedom of fashion, for example. So many times we are unable to dress as we please because we're afraid of what other people might say, how society judges us. I think we need to stop judging our own selves and start thinking with more freedom.

3. What is The One Moment You Feel Most Free?

by Joe S for SweetEscape in Jakarta

There are so many! I'm a free-spirited person, so most of the time I won't allow circumstances or what others say to determine my freedom. However, if you ask me to mention one particular moment, I think that has to be whenever I went for travelling or holiday. While on holiday, I am free to do whatever I cannot do while working in Jakarta, I can wear things I can't wear while at work, etc. Also, I love to set aside some quality time for my own self, when I can feel totally free.

4. How was Your Experience with SweetEscape?

I did a session with my closests buddies in Jakarta, and honestly at first I was afraid that the photographer would turn out to be like some kind of a wedding-style photographer that he would ask me to pose with flowers! Fortunately, the photographer turned out to be super fun! He's an expert at directing us to pose and finding cool spots to take photos... He even turned out to be one of my friends' friend! I arrived a little bit late for our session at Kota Tua Jakarta, but the photographer was totally cool with it, and don't get me started on the results! They're perfectly retouched and I don't need to edit anything else before posting them to my social media accounts! Great job, SweetEscape!
