Singapore's weather is extremely unpredictable. You might look out of the window of your hotel room in the morning and thought that the grey skies and drizzling rain is going to last the day, but when you go out of the lobby (after wearing your most fashionable trench-coat) the sun is shinging so brightly--only for it to drasticly change into a rainstorm some 15 minutes later. So, just play safe and bring a small, foldable umbrella wherever you go! It can effectively shield you from both the raindrops and the heat of the sun.

2. Wear Comfy Shoes

Singapore is famous for its' modern and sophisticated public transportation system. However when you're exploring its' many inter-connected malls and shopping districts, sometimes you'd have to rely on the most basic transportation system: Walking. Don't worry, Singapore is very walkers-friendly, with wide sidewalks, clear traffic signs, and even sheltered walkways, it is easy to walk your way around town, so make sure to wear your most comfortable walking shoes!

3. Passes! Passes! Passes!

Most of Singapore's public transport system don't accept cash, so never forget to buy and top-up your travel passes such as your EZlink card, which can be easily done on MRT stations or mini markets scattered around the city. Buying designated travel SIM cards is also advisable, as it offers a cheaper option for short-staying visitors who needed high-speed access to internet or to make phone calls to their home countries. A lot of Singapore's attractions also offer discounts and ticket packages for travel pass holders, so make sure to check that also before you go!

4. Speak Like Locals, lah!

by Matthew for SweetEscape in Singapore

Spend one day in the Lion City and you most probably would have noticed that the locals speak with a very interesting and distinct accent. Yes! That's what Singlish (Singaporean-English) sounds like. The locals have a love-hate relationship with this unique way of speaking English, which originated from the mixing of words and phrases from Hokkien, Tamil, Malay, Mandarin, and English, most recognisable from the many interesting suffixes it has such as the famous '-lah' and also '-hor', '-leh', '-lor', -meh, and hundreds other! It might be confusing for visitors and foreigners (especially when ordering food or asking the Taxi Uncle (read: Driver) to go somewhere, but in a way, Singlish trully celebrates how Singapore is an extremely diverse and harmonious multi-cultural society. To learn more to speak like a local, check out this list we complied for you!

5. It's More Than Orchard Road and Shopping

by Hisham for SweetEscape in Singapore

Although Singapore is world-famous for being a shoppers-paradise, the tiny island nation offers infinitely more things to do then just spending dollars on shopping goods! For those of you who are looking for alternatives, visit the Chinese and Japanese Gardens located at Jurong East, where you can find tranquility and serenity amidst the buzzling city. For a beachside getaway, East Coast Park offers a less-busy alternative to the touristy Sentosa, with more seafood dining options availbale. The Henderson Waves and Macritchie Tree Top Walk offers tropical rainforest activities, and the two bridges are surely two of the most instaworthy places in Singapore!
