Sisters in Arts: Ardine, Krisan, Jessica, and Jennifer's Friendship Story
24 Feb 2020EXPERIENCEBY Ezra

As you grow older, you'd notice that your circle of friends started to shrink, and only the closest ones remains. We talked to Ardine, Krisan, Jennifer, and Jessica, four Indonesian graphic designers living in Singapore and best friends since high school days about friendship, adulting, and capturing their friendship memories together.

1. Where did you guys first met?

Ardine and Krisan met at the start of high school, while Jennifer and Jessica are friends since kindergarten. The four of us met when we joined a portfolio preparation course together in Jakarta to enter LASALLE College of the Arts Singapore. What's fun is that both duos–Ardine-Krisan and Jennifer-Jessica–were both famous in our respective high schools as the 'Sweet Seventeen Invitation Duo', because we were the ones designing our friends' sweet-seventeen birthday parties invitations.

2. What made you click together and decided to become friends?

We think it was because we were living alone abroad and we've known each other from before, so we kinda just stuck together from the start. But beyond that, as time went by, we found out that we shared a lot of similarity in life values and sense of humour, so our bond started getting stronger from then on. We went through university life together, spent many sleepless nights doing school projects together. We cried, ate, joked, gossiped, shopped, and relaxed together, and before we realised it, we've found sisters in each other. We've got each other's backs!

3. Now that you've graduated from college and are working in different companies, what kept your friendship going strong until now?

Don't you feel that as we grow older, our circle of friends become smaller and smaller? For us personally, we really felt that these girls are really worth keeping since we've been by each other's side through our ups and downs. We shared our stress and our homesickness to each other and we believe that's what made our friendship strong. Sure, over the years we fought and argued over little things, but in the end we realized how much we should treasure this friendship that we have!

And, let's be honest: Adulting is hard! So whenever us four meet together, even after a busy and tiring day in the office, it's always worth the time because it is always a breath of fresh air and a refreshing meet up! These girls are fun, hilarious, spontaneous, genuine, and most importantly every quality time spent together reminded us of how lucky we are to have each other in our lives!

4. Why do u think capturing your friendship moments is important?

Capturing our togetherness is like treasuring these people and the moments that we shared. So, in years to come, we can look back and cherish the good memories we’ve went through! You can't repeat precious moments nor memories with your loved ones, you can't turn back time! Capturing our friendship allows us to cherish every moment and remind us that life's a climb and it would not have been possible with these people!

We never know when the people in our lives might leave us. This is what make us really cherish each other's company, so taking photos together is a way for us to express the love and appreciation that we have for each other. Nobody wants to take photos–even a selfie–with somebody that means nothing to them right? Also, sometimes it is hard to remember things. So when you capture these little memories, we can look back to it again, and be thankful for the journey we've been through together!

5. Lastly, what lovely illustrations you each did to your photos? Can you tell us the meaning behind them?

Ardine draws sunflower because she's always the bright and cheerful one, always pleasant to be around. Krisan loves to eat so much until she gets bloated and she loves animals–especially cats–and considers them her children, that's why she highlighted her belly part.

Jessica wants to capture her love-hate relationship working in Singapore, from the dark circles around her eyes to illustrate her sleep deprivation, the coffee cup, and the 'let's do this arm', while the 'anywhere & everywhere' and postcards illustration because she's an avid traveler. Jennifer is the sweet one, and is a sweets and boba lover, also she notices that there are a lot of boba-moments in their friendship, hence the illustration!
