In the Indonesian modern dance scene, the names of Frans Antonius Ferdinand and Erick Limans are already extremely popular. While preparing SweetEscape's #posescapechallenge, we managed to talk to these two pro dancers and choreographers about Indonesia's dance scene, self-love, and following your passions.
1. What made you guys fall in love with dance the first time?
Actually we were hooked to dance since we were in primary school. We fell in love with dance right away and because we love it we keep practicing and learning about it. Although we never really went into traditional or classical dancing, we've tried every style of contemporary modern dance.
2. Everybody's crazy about TikTok nowadays. What do you think?
We think it depends on each person whether or not a social media platform is positive or negative. However, in our opinion TikTok is a really positive platform, because it encourages creativity and challenging a lot of people to create content–and dance content too! As dancers, we love it so much!
3. Dance have brought the both of you to places all over Indonesia and the world. Can you tell us something about this experience?
We were both 'born and raised' in the Indonesian dance scene; we started learning here and ended up teaching dance here as well, but whenever we travel abroad–whether it is around Asia or even to United States, we always make time to get involved with the local dance scene, to join in a dance class and visit dance studios. We want to do this to enlarge our vision, to keep learning and finding new inspirations for us to then teach to our students in Indonesia!
4. Any particular cities where you feel most alive as dancers?
We love all of them! But if we have to pick one, other than Paradigm (Frans and Erick's home-base in Jakarta), we have to say Los Angeles, Seoul, and Shinjuku in Tokyo, Japan. We always get great references and inspirations whenever we visit these places!
We always spend a lot of our times going to studios, getting involved in classes and dance workshops whenever we travel to these cities even during holidays, so much so that our friends keep texting us, telling us to stop working and enjoy the holiday! But since this is our passion, we never felt that it's 'work'. We simply enjoyed dancing!
5. February is the month of love, including self-love. What do you have to say for young, aspiring dancers out there looking up to the both of you?
Never be afraid or ashamed to chase your dream, including dancing, because you can keep learning and keep redoing it even if you fail. Just appreciate yourselves just the way you are, express your inner-value, and just be confident to start chasing your dreams and passions, because if you keep postponing it, it will never be a reality.
