When you’re traveling to foreign places, there’s no better way to get a local insight other than first hand information from the people who know it best. And in our case, it is Kateryna - SweetEscape’s own Rome photographer. Check out all her personal Autumn tips in the making of the best fall holiday when in Rome.
“Rome is a unique city with a very special atmosphere and incredible energy,” Kateryna recalled. With stream of admirers and tourists from all over the world, countless have walked along its street for centuries while marvelling the intricate monuments, sunsets and majestic ruins. “Rome gives you a feeling of eternity,” Kateryna further said.
Rome is blessed with good weather all year round with long sunny days that are perfect for walking, be it during winter or autumn. “Just don’t lose yourself when you’re in the city and try to explore as much as you can.” With plenty of resting spots such as a bar or cafe, you can easily chill with a cup of cappuccino and a croissant just like any Italian would do. “I like also very much cute tiny streets with small cafes which can show the atmosphere of eternal city. That’s why I would recommend also the part of Rome which called Trastevere,” said Kateryna.
It is hard for Kateryna to pick one favorite place in Rome, because to her Rome is a place of constant beauty. “If I had to choose, I’d say that I love some streets - via Margutta, via Coronari, via del Governo Vecchio,” she said. Kateryna also loves the small backyards of the city which are mostly close for public. “So whenever one is open, I would love to show my clients these secret places of Rome.”
As for the best time to capture the magic of Rome, Kateryna personally loves the morning sunrise. “Rome is a pretty busy city, but in the morning you will find the charming empty streets and squares,” Kateryna explained. “The sunlight in Rome is strong, but in the morning it can get quite soft and lovely. So, it’s perfect for that romantic and warm feeling for photos”.
For sunrises, Kateryna recommends Gianicolo hill while her sunset spot is on Pincio Hill. There is also Fontana di Trevi and Piazza Navona which are excellent in the morning with the view from the terrace straight to where the Roman Forum is. Lastly, there is Coppede for a modern part of Rome with eclecticism architecture.
To find more beautiful architecture, Kateryna loves the ancient ruins which are located in the city center. “You can find medieval streets with small houses with green facades and balconies full of flowers, elegant renaissance squares, magnificent baroque fountains, neo classical palaces and modern ones too.” This is why Kateryna thinks that there is a place for everyone when in Rome. “Whatever you prefer, there are many symbolic spots that are impressive, monumental and absolutely beautiful such as Colosseum, Fontana di Trevi, Spanish steps, Pantheon, Castel Sant’Angelo, Roman Forum, Vatican, Piazza del Campidoglio.”
Since there are so many unusual places in Rome, it can be difficult to select just one for the best cityscape of Rome. “Each corner of Rome is utterly special, so you need to decide what kind of image you have in mind, then you can finalize some of the best locations that you prefer,” Kateryna said.
Another way to pick the best location is by taking the photo shoot near where you live place to live. “There are a lot of hotels and apartment in Rome with terraces which has a wonderful view on the city, so make sure to check your hotel before booking and you may just have the best photo shoot location right where you stay.”
Kateryna illustrates Rome as a city with the color of warm sand. “You can expect some red-orange brick walls and a lot of buildings made with my favorite stone - travertine,” Kateryna said. Travertine is indeed the color of Rome because this stone is just everywhere in Rome. A lot of ancient and baroque monuments ( for example Colosseum) were built with it.
“Rome has a beige color with beautiful structures, so almost all colors of clothing will good here,” Kateryna dished out some fashion tips. “I always ask my clients to show me their clothing choices and then recommend the best places based on their looks.” She further says that pastel colors are her most favorite colors. “It looks good everywhere in Rome and creates such romantic mood.” Alternatively, Kateryna said that a little intensity from dark colors clothing will also do the trick in making the best photography results when in Rome.
