Celebrating traditions is essential to the Muslim community. During Ramadhan, Muslims have to maintain a strict daily fast from dawn until sunset; they are not allowed to eat or drink during these daylight hours.
Besides this, every family can also have their own special traditions during Ramadhan. SweetEscape had a small interview with one of the famous public figures in Indonesia, Soraya Larasati. Soraya Larasati is an Indonesian actress, model, news presenter, and sport enthusiast. Let’s take a look at Soraya & her family's story!
The moments that I have been waiting for the most are being able to eat suhoor and iftar together as a family. It also felt like a new experience because my children are learning to fast during this Ramadhan. I also believe that Ramadhan is the time to worship more than we usually do on a day-to-day basis. Not to mention, the activities that I am doing at the moment feel more relieving and peaceful during Ramadhan.
I don’t feel we have a special tradition during Ramadhan. However, we always try to have bonding time as a family during suhoor, the pre-dawn meal. Because when at iftar, everyone was already busy and we might do our iftar separately. It’s different when it comes to suhoor, the right moment for bonding, because if not during Ramadhan, we rarely get up at 3 AM in the morning and eat and pray together as a family.
To be honest, I'm very happy because it feels like we are back to normal, as in life before the pandemic. I also find working more flexible during fasting month, and my sports activities are easier to execute. I believe this Ramadhan is also about respecting the people who are fasting yet still becoming active per usual.
Fasting during Ramadhan is about satisfying one’s own desire and only doing God's will. Apart from enduring thirst and hunger, we must guard against our own ego and bad desires. Also, I believe during Ramadhan, we must be a much better person than before!
