There is always a reason to celebrate a milestone in your life. Whether it's graduation, being a newlywed or in Melissa Karim's case, turning 40.
Much has been said and written about turning 40. Just what is it about this age that makes it special? To many women, the 30s are about self-development, building a career as well as cultivating my skills and successes in personal relationships. This is perhaps why the 40s are regarded as the refinement and the enhancement of these successes and developments. After all, it is true that age is a good marker for one's achievements in life.
The same thing could absolutely be said about our favourite gal, Melissa. The host, actress and mom extraordinaire spoke to us and shared her insight on feeling like a 14-year-old girl in a 40-year-old body. Wanna know what she has to say? Read on below!
"To be honest, turning 40 was kind of shaky. I think any woman approaching this age feels the same way, whether she admits it or not. When you were in your 20s, you would think your 40s are still light years away but then you hit the big number. You think, "Where did the years go?", and it kind of caught me off guard.
For some reason, I felt reluctant about entering a new decade in my life. I was like, "Can't I be 36 forever?". It got quite heavy, honestly. I realized that I needed to do something about it, so I decided to pack up and travel instead of getting stressed out about getting older.
I went to Barcelona and it changed my point of view. Being in a new place did bring a change of pace and with it came a new perspective too. I didn't really know what to expect, I just knew I had to go so when the whole thing turned out to be extremely good, I was quite surprised! It gave me that much-needed boost of confidence and just general good feelings, it made me feel good about turning 40 and right then and there I thought to myself that, hey, turning 40 isn't so bad after all.
During my travels in Barcelona, soaking in the city's modern yet soulful vibe - the city has been around for thousands of years - opened up my horizon. I came to realize that age is not just a number, it's simply a marker of how much you've been molded by life. And it was such a revelation! I knew I had made the right choice. The whole experience just made me feel good.
But at the same time, I wouldn't say other people have to travel too to come to this realization. If you're turning 40 and feeling hesitant about it, let me say this: entering the big 40 means that you are now stronger, smarter and wittier - thanks to everything that you have proudly survived in the years prior. Take it from me, it truly is a blessing! Being a petite girl, I wasn't always confident about my size, but now I can say that I'm happy to be 40 but still looking 14. Life is good. I feel good. There's nothing to complain about!" - Melissa Karim
