Adjust, rearrange, re-calibrate. We’ve all taken steps to adjust to the changes imposed by CoViD- 19. Things that used to be thought of as essential do not seem to be as important anymore and that’s okay. But exactly how drastic will the changes be?

Travel & Tourism

This industry was one of the first to take a major hit when the disease started spreading across borders. Everything related to travel and tourism were put on hold prompting airlines, hotels, and restaurants to pause operations. In the next few months, however, in an attempt to recover, this industry will gradually resume operations.

In the last 3 months, airlines have taken the necessary steps to put safety measures in place for when they resume flights. The check-in process will take longer than usual, but it is to guarantee the safety of all passengers. International travel will be very limited for now, but domestic travel will be highly encouraged to help strengthen the economy. Accommodation establishments are also preparing for the new normal. Health screenings will be required before guests can enter hotel premises; travel history should also be declared. Room occupancy will be limited to two persons and hotels are encouraged to reconfigure room settings to ensure 2-meter distancing for the beds. Dining establishments will also cut capacity in half following safe distancing for the benefit of their customers. Food take-out and delivery will continue to be an alternative option for customers, too.

Education

Millions of students all over the country are affected by school closures due to the CoViD-19 pandemic. The Philippine Department of Education has already announced that the next school year would begin sometime in August and they have started providing alternative methods of learning which include online classes and workshops. Teachers will also need to undergo training in preparation for teaching online. The advantages of online learning include flexibility and self-paced learning, lower costs, improved virtual communication and collaboration, better time management, refined critical thinking skills, and new technical skills. And even though students will definitely miss classroom interactions, this alternative option ensures they continue learning while acquiring new skills.

A current learning method gaining even more popularity is homeschooling students. According to Joy Mendoza, one of the country’s foremost advocates for homeschooling children, homeschooling is a lifestyle of learning wherein the parents take on the role of teaching their kids. It is a holistic, customized learning experience as it incorporates full day-to-day activities in the lessons. This method allows parents to cultivate character while teaching their children and gives back precious family time lost. Plus, learning outside the four walls of a classroom gives students a better sense of their surroundings, is a definite win as they prepare for their future.

Businesses

With the obvious downside of this pandemic being the loss of jobs for millions of Filipinos, creativity & resiliency kicks in. Online businesses are popping up left and right giving Filipinos the chance to survive. Physical stores also found an opportunity to keep going by transitioning their stores to online platforms. For businesses, digital is the new normal. After the lockdown is lifted there has been a major shift to digital services, including digital payments and even telemedicine. And while the long term is still unpredictable, these changes will continue to be amplified with how we shop in the foreseeable future.
