5 Ways To Show Your Nationalism While Traveling
15 Aug 2018INSPIRATIONBY SweetEscape

The love for one’s country is not limited to just several things, such as appreciating the holidays, celebrating Independence Day or rooting for your home sports teams. Our patriotism to the country should also come purely from the heart, and is to be reflected in every little thing that we do.

Let's consider ourselves lucky that nowadays, to express our love for our country doesn’t have to involve physical sacrifice. As a matter of fact, you can contribute to Indonesia through your love for the simplest things, including traveling! In this special month for Indonesians, check out these 5 small acts of nationalism that you can do while traveling :

1. Be a responsible traveler

The recent fire that swept across the hills on the small island in Komodo National Park has brought an awareness that probably many of us haven’t even thought about before. The disaster was said to have devastated the entire island. It was also rumored that the fire was started by a bunch of careless travelers and in turn, enraged and saddened many of the traveling communities.

Whether or not it is true, being a responsible traveler can be the simplest act of nationalism that we all can aspire to do when traveling (and in our daily life!). Never litter, reduce your carbon footprints, and stay away from damaging the wonderful nature - they are all a simple start to a better ecotourism in Indonesia.

2. Promote, promote, promote

Indonesia is simply beautiful and worth to be explored to every corner, from Sabang to Merauke. Promoting the beauty of our country gets very easy nowadays with technology aka your social media. Think of it as a way to encourage people to understand Indonesia better, what amazing things the country holds and how Indonesia truly is a destination worthy for every kind of vacation.

3. Support local

Other than visiting local destinations, your small act of nationalism can continue all the way by supporting its local business.

Instead of dining at an international burger chain, order a traditional gudeg sold by humble local residents; forget your cappuccino for a day and try a local brew of Kopi Luwak instead; or maybe shop local with all the amazing arts and crafts, fashion clothing, and other endless quality items that are made right here in our home country.

4. Dress up for the ocassion

If there is one simple yet fashionable thing we can do to show our love to the country, then it’ll be the gorgeous batik prints. Include a little something in your traveling wardrobe, from a scarf to a pair of casual batik pants that are perfect for a peaceful stroll around the beach.

5. Actually Celebrate

If you’re going somewhere on the long weekend due to a national holiday, then celebrate it like you mean it! Have a celebratory dinner, put on a touch of red and white, or dedicate a post of appreciation while you’re posing againts the beauty of its nature - anything that works for you is always better than nothing at all!

So, how will you be celebrating Indonesia's independence day this year?
