Overall during Ramadan, your body would require energy and nutrients during the day, so make sure to consume foods that are rich in Protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. This doesn’t mean that you should eat everything during the morning! Our body metabolism adapts to our eating patterns, having too much energy intake in the morning will be ineffective for your body to absorb, and can lead to weight gains.

A light, healthy and filling breakfast during Suhoor (meal period before sunrise) is a great way to make you feel energetic throughout the day. You can eat fruits, dairy products and fresh vegetables like cheeses, eggs, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Another addition would be whole wheat bread which is good for your digestion. Dried fruits like dates, walnuts and almonds are also good supplements to make you feel full for long hours!

What to Avoid

Avoid eating snacks after Iftar (meal period after sunset) and then going to sleep, or even skipping Suhoor and staying hungry until the next Iftar. Eating before bedtime or skipping your meal during Suhoor can cause problems from dehydration, low blood sugar problems, and dizziness during the day. So a preferable time to eat during Suhoor would be right before fasting starts.

Make sure to drink plenty of water after breaking fast! Adults would need to drink about 3-4 litres of water a day. If you exercise, make sure to lower the intensity and focus more on staying healthy than gaining muscles. To help with your digestion, when breaking fast try to start with soup then water or juice, so you can hydrate your body after a long day. Afterwards, eat the main course 10-15 minutes later.
