"We have been together for 4 years now. How we met was completely unexpected, totally ironic, and I think we still can’t believe it happened to us. I was in Paris with my mom and supposed to get on a flight back to my base in Singapore but ended up missing my flight and staying in the city longer than intended.
On my last day in Paris, I was sitting at a café sipping on red wine studying the metro map to decide what to do next when suddenly I looked across the café and locked eyes with this handsome, brown-eyed gentleman. I tried to look away, but our eyes kept coming back to one another. I gathered up the courage the walk over to his table and introduce myself. We struck up a conversation that led to a long date night, including drinks at a second place and a midnight stroll through Paris.
I sent Francis a dozen white roses as soon as I landed in Singapore; then for the next two years, we flew back and forth to see each other every 2 weeks or less. I proposed to him in Jardin de Tuileries, where I had been the morning of the day we met.
I think marriage means loving all the good, the bad, and the ugly that you see in your partner. It's about compromising and working together to make something beautiful out of your relationship. Our biggest piece of advice for married couples would be to spend a lot of time together, especially in your first year of marriage. Scheduling date nights, powering off your mobile phones, and taking time to connect is vital for a healthy relationship and it helps keep the things you love about your partner at the forefront of your mind.
We came back to Paris to celebrate our one year anniversary as a married couple. I hope that our story inspires others to know that they can have the life they’ve always dreamed of. Because as much I wanted to find someone like Francis, deep down I’m not sure if I ever truly believed that it could be a reality. But this past year, being his husband is the happiest I have ever been. Waking up beside him is the best part of my day, and I’m so lucky that I get to do that for the rest of my life." - Christian Mark Jacobs
