6 Tips on Getting That Paw-Some Moment from SweetEscape's Pet Photographer
25 Sep 2019INSPIRATIONBY SweetEscape

Getting your pupper to strike a pose or simply sit still is a struggle we know all too well here at SweetEscape but our photographers always manage to get that shot! From our recent event with Bark Central Philippines on September 22, 2019, we’ve rounded up a few hacks from our team and yes, it involved being ready with a treat (or two!).

1. Be ready with treats and squeaky toys

Your dog won't just look at the camera if you tell him to. Place the treats/toys on top of the camera so that you can cheat the angle of their eyes towards the lens. Another trick is to use squeaky toys to grab their attention and make them face the camera with a sparkle in their eyes. If all else fails, making strange noises is sure to make your dog look your direction and even give you a cute inquisitive look for the camera.

2. Be prepared with a variety of outfits and/or props

Most dogs can't give you different angles on cue. If your dog will let you put them on, be prepared with props or costumes to add variety to the shoot and maximize your time.

3. Familiarize him with the location

Whether he is going to be sitting on a bench or perched on top of a table, let your dog sniff around and familiarize himself with the set up. You can't expect him to sit/stand and be ready right away for the camera. Expect a few minutes of exploring and excitement before he settles down and sits still. If shooting at a specific location, bring him earlier than the shooting time so he can explore the place and feel comfortable.

4. Take burst shots

Dogs don't know what 1, 2, 3 smile means. They could give you the perfect cute angle at any second! They could suddenly move their heads or lick their lips while you're snapping away. Taking quick bursts ensures one of the 20 photos of the same angle you took is insta-worthy.

5. Be patient

Dogs will bark, run away, jump off set, pee, and get distracted during the shoot. Allocate some time allowance for these instances. Double the time needed for humans to shoot your dogs in each scene/layout.

6. Get in the photo with him

It's cute to have solo photos of your dog but we are 100% sure, he is happiest when his best friend joins the frame. It's also easier to move him around into different positions, carry him or make him sit still.
